Radioactive molecule detected in space

In a first, astronomers have detected a radioactive molecule in space, believed to be from a stellar explosion that took place in the 17th century.

The radioactive molecule was spotted with the Northern Extended Millimetre Array and the Atacama Large Millimetre/ Submillimeter Array radio telescopes. The radioactive molecule is an isotope of aluminium monofluoride.

Lok Sabha passed Arbitration and Conciliation Bill (Amendment) 2018

The Lok Sabha on August 10, 2018 passed the Arbitration and Conciliation Bill (Amendment) 2018, which provides for time-bound settlement of disputes as well as accountability of the arbitrator. The bill was introduced in Lok Sabha by the Minister for Law and Justice, PP Chaudhary on July 18. The bill seeks to amend the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996. The Act contains provisions to deal with domestic and international arbitration, and defines the law for conducting conciliation proceedings.

West Bengal Assembly passes resolution to rename State as ‘Bangla’

The West Bengal Assembly passed a resolution to rename the State as ‘Bangla’ in three languages — Bengali, English and Hindi. The move is aimed at climbing the alphabetical sequence of State names in which West Bengal appears last in the list now. The State will have to wait for the nod from the Union Home Ministry for the final approval of the resolution. Earlier, the Centre had rejected the State government’s proposals of having three names Bangla (in Bengali), Bengal (in English) and Bangal (in Hindi). The Mamata Banerjee government’s proposal to rename West Bengal as Paschim Bango in 2011 was turned down by the Centre.

Cabinet approved amendments in instant triple talaq bill, seeks approval from Rajya Sabha

The Union Cabinet on August 9, 2018 approved a few amendments in the instant triple talaq bill, making it permissible for a magistrate to give bail for the offence. The amended triple talaq bill will be tabled in Rajya Sabha on August 10, 2018 for its approval. The draft bill, officially called Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill 2017, was passed by the LoK Sabha in December 2017. The bill makes instant triple talaq a criminal offence. The bill was prepared by an inter-ministerial group headed by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

Union Cabinet approved law provisioning death penalty for maritime piracy

The Union Cabinet on August 2, 2018 approved a bill provisioning death penalty or life imprisonment to those involved in piracy at sea. The main objective of the anti-maritime piracy bill is to have a domestic anti-piracy legislation to provide the necessary legal framework within the country for the prosecution of those involved in piracy-related crimes.

Lok Sabha passed Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill, 2018

The Lok Sabha on July 30, 2018 passed the Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill, 2018 that proposes to enhance punishment for rape of a child. The Bill seeks to replace the Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance promulgated on April 21, 2018 following an outcry over the rape and murder of a minor girl in Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir and the rape of another woman at Unnao in Uttar Pradesh.
